Clinical trial of phototherapy and or oral phenobarbital in reducing neonatal hyperbilirubinemia

Abstract
We compared the effectiveness of 20 cases of phototherapy and 20 cases of phototherapy combined with phenobarbital.
The patients of both group were sampled at random among the patients of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia treated in Kang Nam St. Mary¢¥s Hospital from July 1980 to April 1981. In this study group, the patients in following conditions such as infection, hypothermia, hypoproteinemia, perinatal asphyxia, acidosis, respiratory distress, hemolytic disease were excluded.
The results were as follows;
1) The mean decreasing level of serum bilirubin per day was 2.3 mg/dl in phototherapy combined. with oral phenobarbital group and 1.6mg/dl in singularly phototherapy group.
2) The peak mean decreasing level of serum bilirubin per day was 3.3rng/dl in phototherapy combined with oral phenobarbital group and 2.2mg/dl in singularly phototherapy group. The peak mean decreasing levels of serum bilirubin per day were noted in the first 24 hours from the initiation of treatment in both groups.
3) The mean duration of phototherapy was 98.4 hours in phototherapy combined with oral phenobarbital group and 112.8 hours in singularly phototherapy group.
